Who We Are
A competitive athlete his entire life, “Derz” played football at both the Air Force Academy and Texas A&M – Commerce. He fell in love with fitness in college while working in the offseason at the Academy. He was fortunate enough to initially develop his knowledge from Allen Hedrick, M.A., CSCS*D, the head strength and conditioning coach at both the Olympic Training Center and the Air Force Academy.
He continued his education at Texas A&M – Commerce under Dr. Ken Alford, PhD. In 2006, Mycal graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Health and Human Performance, Kinesiology. Upon the completion of his collegiate career, his focus was shifted to bodybuilding where he placed in the top five of each competition, winning two classes along the way. As an Officer of Marines, he spent time developing remedial fitness programs for the Marines in various units boosting performance in annual Physical Fitness Tests by more than 25%. In 2009 and 2011 he developed offseason strength and conditioning programs for the Gila Ridge High School Football team, helping them reach the 2011 Arizona State Playoffs for the first time in school history. This programing helped a number of players move on to play at the college level. Mycal now regularly competes locally and regionally in CrossFit competitions.
With a Master’s of Science in Exercise and Wellness (Arizona State), backed by Bachelor’s of Science in Health and Human Performance (TAMU-Commerce), Mycal has dedicated his life to applying his education to fitness and performance training. According to his peers and clients, Mycal is one of the best performance coaches in Arizona.
A competitive athlete since a young age, playing every sport available, Caleb searched for an outlet for his competitive side. He decided to give CrossFit a shot — he was hooked after his first workout. After two years of collegiate basketball Caleb transferred to Arizona State University to pursue his interest in strength and conditioning. Caleb graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise and Wellness. Caleb continued his education with an internship under Mycal Anders at CrossFit PHX. Caleb strives to be a better coach with his consistent desire to learn. He wants to push you to your limits and help you achieve goals you thought were out of reach.
Athletic her entire life, Laura played many sports from a young age, and played in competitive leagues throughout high school. She enjoyed playing soccer in college as well. Laura graduated from Kansas State University with a major in Public Relations with a minor in Leadership Studies.
Laura has always been passionate about training, but when she found CrossFit in early 2012 she instantly found a passion for the sport. This led her to get her CrossFit Level 1 certification so she could share her passion with others. She takes pride in studying fitness and training methodology to learn more and become a more effective coach for our athletes at CF PHX. Laura’s competitive spirit helps her push her athletes to the next level. As a coach she prides herself in setting the example though clean living and intense training, keeping athletes motivated to constantly perform and push themselves and have fun along the way.
Jared is an extremely dedicated CrossFit coach and athlete. Jared has been CrossFitting for over 6 years and has had his CFL1 since December of 2011. He has also been competing in weightlifting for 2 years, even qualifying for USAW Nationals and the USAW American Open. Jared has been involved with sports as an athlete since he was 5 years old. He competed all through high school in baseball, basketball, tennis, cross-country, and track and field (pole vault, high jump, long jump, triple jump). When Jared is not in the gym, coaching or training, he is helping his beautiful wife raise their beautiful baby girl. CrossFit has changed his life, and it will change yours if you let it. Jared is available for one-on-one and small group personal training.
Alyssa is a transplant from Chicago. She came to Arizona to open her practice helping her clients improve their health and lifestyle. With her passion to help heal the public and her enthusiasm for athleticism, bringing the two together was a no brainer! Alyssa’s career began in a chiropractor’s office where she became fascinated with the clinical aspect of massage and sports rehabilitation modalities. Her mission is to learn new ways to create balance in the body, and develop that knowledge as an expertise in application. She specializes in deep tissue, sports, and rehabilitation massage along with many other modalities. According to the American Massage Therapy Association massage acts to improve performance by the increasing and enhancing blood circulation, helps relieve muscle tension, reduce soreness, and improve range of motion to facilitate speedier recovery. In short, bodywork and massage can help with pain relief, build muscle and enhanced recovery.
