After a revoked scholarship to run Track & Field at a Division I University, due to injuries sustained in high school, Darrel enlisted into the military and found CrossFit.
While on duty overseas, Darrel had the opportunity to jump onboard a CrossFit-Games-Contending team as a coach at the affiliate. Quickly realizing the capacity of the opportunity, he leapt towards it.
A few short years of coaching later, he then was offered a job to be a subject matter expert (SME) for the CrossFit Seminar Staff and taught seminars all around the world – primarily specializing in endurance sports, programming, methodology, and movement recognition. After full emersion into the CrossFit realm, Darrel then opened up his own non-profit CrossFit affiliate in Southern New Mexico where he was stationed for just over three years before relocating to Phoenix.
Born in Wyoming and raised in Montana, David never thought he would be living in the desert attempting to exercise and help others do the same, but he is happy with where the newest chapter of his life has landed him.
David first discovered CrossFit about 4 years ago, pretty nervous to try his first workout. He had years of experience at a more traditional gym, hitting upper body workouts regularly and always “saving” his legs for pick up basketball. Yes, he always skipped leg day.
Needless to say, the first workout really whooped him. But as he was helped off the floor by a fellow classmate whom he hadn’t met, that’s when it hit him; the people involved in CrossFit are something special.
Over the last 4 years while living in Spokane, WA and working at Gonzaga (his alma-matter) he dedicated hours a day in the gym; learning the movements and methodology, slowly progressing in his knowledge and abilities and eventually securing his CrossFit Level 1 certificate.
Recently married, he decided to abandon his PNW roots and move down to the desert for a change of pace. Walking through the doors of PHX he immediately recognized the community as class personified. He feels privileged to be able to share what he can with everyone here in their fitness journey.
A little bit about his life outside of the gym: he loves board games, Lord of the Rings trivia, Dungeons and Dragons sessions, and staying in touch with his emotions by writing poetry.
